Photographs made in collaboration with Monte Cazazza, 1990-1992

In the early 1990s while living in San Francisco, Handelman collaborated with her then-partner, industrial music and zine pioneer Monte Cazazza, on a series of photographic works called The Torture Series, that capture the artists’ use of their own bodies as screens for projected collages referencing histories of both political torture and early sadomasochism, embuing the cinematic with the corporeal to trace a minoritized history of pain.
